Plymouth’s Pioneering Research, Funded By You

Dr. Juri Na shares her research into improving treatment for meningioma, a slow-growing brain cancer. With no current chemotherapy options, patients often rely on surgery or radiotherapy—both of which have limitations. Her work explores combining radiotherapy with other therapies to enhance effectiveness. She also highlights the crucial support of Peninsula Medical Foundation in funding PhD students like Shahana Shaji, whose research is making real progress and contributing to peer-reviewed publications.

Dr. Leandro José De Assis explains his investigation into how the protein hexokinase 2 regulates cell growth through its influence on the androgen receptor, using flow cytometry to measure receptor expression, while Dr. Mahmoud Labib is engineering microfluidic devices to analyse lung cancer samples and predict brain metastases, while also developing therapies for glioblastoma, and Professor David Parkinson is leading research into low-grade brain tumours, studying how they form and grow, and testing new drugs to improve treatment. All three projects are supported with funding from PMF.
