Our mission
PMF was founded in the 1999 by a group of like-minded supporters with the aim of providing funding for medical research, innovation and education. These vital activities continue to be key to the thriving Specialist Hospital, its University Medical School and healthcare across Devon and Cornwall.
Advancing Medicine Through Research
Medical research drives breakthroughs in treating diseases like cancer, Parkinson’s, diabetes, and liver failure. In Plymouth, brain cancer samples are analyzed by university scientists to create personalized treatments—an innovation unthinkable just a decade ago.

Research Costs Money
Major breakthroughs now happen at the genetic and protein level. Research teams in Plymouth and beyond are uncovering how our cells function—and sometimes fail—leading to innovations like gene therapy and COVID vaccines. Small grants from PMF remain vital to launch new projects and support existing ones.
Supporting Medical Students
Many of the Peninsula Medical School graduates work in the South West and some are now consultants in local hospitals. The undergraduate medical course is 5-6 years in length which can be a big financial burden. Through the provision of bursaries, the PMS is doing much to widen access to medical training.
